Coding Theory and Hyperplane Arrangements

Abstract: Coding theory is mainly concerned with sending or preserving information in an efficient manner. Channel encoding is about sending information through a noisy channel. Designing efficient and practical encoding-decoding schemes is a difficult problem. We will discuss Shannon’s ground-work theorem on designing communication schemes and the metric of the information world which is the Hamming distance. In this talk, linear codes will be the main focus. The aim is to find and compute invariants of linear codes by establishing connections with other mathematical objects such as hyperplane arrangements, matroids and graphs.
